From the Pastor's Study

Do You Know Who You Are?
May 11, 2010By Dr. Kenneth R. Sesley

For many, being able to identify with someone or some organization that is famous, wealthy or powerful is the thing that gives them t their greatest self-worth.  They often boast in who they are because of it and also who they know as a result of it. They use this identity to open doors that would otherwise be closed to them; therefore, garnering them unmerited opportunities, power and success.  It lines up with the age old cliché of "it's not what you know, but who you know that's important in life."  That's also true for the Body of Christ.  We have a far greater identity in Christ than any earthly identity, but few take advantage of it or even dare to know anything about it.

As believers, when we identify with Christ, we identify with the very King of the Glory!  Through our identity in Christ we are promoted to a higher level than those of this world.  We are now identified as sons and daughters of the Most High God; heirs of the promises given to Abraham; joint heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Galatians 3:29; Ephesians 3:6; Romans 8:17; Romans 9:26; Galatians 3:26).  Although we are a part of this world in the natural, we are not of this world because we operate in our spiritual identity with Christ (John 15:19; John 17:14-16).  We are a totally different class and race (2 Corinthians 5:17).  We have been given power, authority and blessings through the resurrected Jesus Christ (Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 2:5 - 6).  We are seated with Him in Heavenly places, far above all principality, power, might and dominion (Ephesians 1:21). The moment we were born-again, Christ's redemption became ours!  As we now have our identity in Him, we can also identify with victory in every area of life and all that He has redeemed us from…sin, sickness, depression, poverty, worry, fear, doubt, lack, oppression, terror and anything else that is under the law of sin and death.

I encourage you to study to show yourself approved…and rightly divide the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Take time to dig into the Word of God and know your true identity!  Dare to become like the Apostle Paul and let your aim be to know Christ; to know the power of His resurrection; to know the fellowship of His sufferings; and to know the power of your being conformed to His death (Philippians 3:10 - 13).  For only when you know Who He is, can you know your identity in Him.  Purpose in all you do to apprehend Christ and to pursue His likeness.  I can promise you that when you apprehend the One Who apprehended you, then you will know the true riches of your new identity.  Forget the past, for old things are passed away and all things have been made new (including your past identity, victories, failures and sins) according to 2 Corinthians 5:17.  Believe me, your identity in Christ is far greater than your identity with any human and any earthly organization.
